The LIBERTY ETERNAL’s mess hall was blessed with the cooking of Kaname Tamaki. The man was one of the best chefs in the universe, and he had decided to put his skills to use in serving the proud soldiers of the TTF by cooking their meals, and making their rations taste like restaurant style cooking.
It helped boost morale significantly, and the crew were very happy to have Warrant Officer Kaname along. Especially Melshen Penning.
“Oh that was good,” Melshen said.
“You now you’re always welcome to tip me,” Kaname called out from the kitchen.
“You’ve got a better dental plan than me, you don’t need a tip,” Melshen yelled back.
Kaname laughed, and went back to getting the next set of rations ready for C lunch. Melshen put her tray in the rack, and left the mess hall. She intended to go straight for her office, and relax but a familiar face appeared in her path.
Melshen smiled and said lovingly, “Hello Drake.”
“Hello my lovely blood flower,” Drake said, “How is my favorite Vampara doing today?”
“Very well. How is my favorite destroyed of the laws of reality doing?” Melshen said.
“Fantastic, but it could be better,” Drake said, “And I know how to make it so.”
Drake obviously had another one of his crazy ideas in his head. Melshen always enjoyed Drake’s shenanigans. That’s also probably why she wasn’t at the but end of most of them.
“So what are we doing that will make this day blow the roof of the ship and suck us out into space?” Melshen asked.
“Hopefully not that much. Something that awesome might cause a permanent rip in this section of the universe,” Drake said, “No I was thinking more along the lines of introducing our audience to the mysteries of sci-fi fantasy.”
“Sci-fi what now?” Melshen asked.
Drake leaned closer to her face, and said the word,” Magic.”
“And here we are. The LIBERTY ETERNAL’s Arcanium,” Drake said.
Melshen had never been to this room before. It was heavily discouraged that soldiers make random visits to the room full of reality bending experiments and materials.
Magic was strange and weird. It operated on its own set of rules from the laws of physics yet at the same timed followed them to the letter. It was largely a confusing mess that most people just couldn’t understand that well.
That was mainly why there was so few of them, but the ones that did exist were often scooped up by governments and placed in special institutions that studied magic. Each nation that had magic user did things differently. Some nations were filled with magic users, and it was a part of everyday life. Others, like the TTF, with low magic using populations found magic random and chaotic, and used it for little else besides military applications.
Exactly what the two officers in the room were doing.
“Captains Mui Siba, and Rose Wilhelm. How you doing?” Drake asked.
There was a shout, and the sound of a helmet hitting a table. A TTF officer appeared behind a set of strange plants. Her helmet had a tri-shaped headpiece on the front of her helmet, and a black cape draped down her shoulders. Her upper arms, thighs, and abdomen lacked heavy plate armor, and were only protected by thick flexible kevlar pads.
“Oh Captain Drake, hello ugh welcome to the Arcanium,” she said nervously, “I’m Captain Mui Siba.”
Just behind Mui, another TTF officer stepped out from behind a console, and looked calmly at the new arrivals.
“He knows that already Mui,” she said seriously, “Our names appear on our heads up display.”
“Oh right sorry Rose, I’ll ugh remember next time,” Mui said, “Now where did I put that thing.”
Drake and Melshen carefully stepped into the room. It looked like Mui and Rose were already in the middle of several experiments going on at once. Melshen observed a blob like creature floating around in a glass cage. Rose noticed Melshen take an interest in the creature, and walked over to her.
“That’s an Albu-balbus,” Rose said, “It’s very dangerous, and will try to slick through your nose to get to your brain, and eat it.”
Melshen glanced between Rose, and the brain eating creature.
“I’ll keep my helmet on,” Melshen said.
“It’s actually a requirement while in the Arcanium, so yes you should,” Rose said.
Melshen resisted the urge to groan. Rose was another “books only” soldier that she had to deal with. Just great.
Drake was watching Mui pour crushed crystals onto the plant she was working with.
“What are you doing right now?” Drake asked.
Mui dumped all the crystals remains out, and set their container aside.
“I’m going to input energy though these crystals, and make this plant grow an apple,” Mui said.
Drake looked the plant over in thought.
“How’s that going to blow up a tank?” he asked.
“It’s proof of concept. Eventually I want to make this thing into a landmine,” Mui said.
“Oooooh I like that,” Drake said.
“Okay now let me concentrate,” Mui said.
Mui held her hand out, and a faint glow enveloped it. The crystals began to glow too, and soon the entire plant. After a few seconds, an apple popped out of the top. Mui stopped, and took the apple from the plant and cut it open. Inside was just an apple.
“Awesome,” Drake said.
“Oh ugh thank you. I work very hard,” Mui said.
“So what else do you have cooking?” Drake asked.
Then something fell, and clanged on the metal floor. Rose went to go check it out, and left Mui alone with Drake and Melshen. The mage was certainly nervous without her co-worker nearby.
“So um do you like magic too? I studied all my life, and I’ve always been fascinated with all the different applications and types of magic that exist in the universe. The TTF always say that magic is dangerous and should be used cautiously, but I just thnk that because they just aren’t used to it yet, and so I’ve been trying to find other ways it can be used in large scale like in hospitals and farms and buildings and ships and…”
“Captain Mui,” Drake said.
“Hugh yes?” Mui asked.
“You can relax,” Drake said.
“Oh ugh right,” Mui said.
“You’re more high strung than Rodriguez,” she said, and gave Mui a slap on the behind.
Mui gasped, and jumped at the sudden assault, and tried to make herself appear smalled.
“Oh ugh thanks?” Mui said.
“No,” Drake said.
“Oh,” Mui said looking down.
Rose came back, and held up three books.
“These were set on a bookshelf, and could not have fallen on their own,” Rose said.
“So there’s an entity here?” Drake suggested.
“I think we’ve got stealth units,” Rose said.
Rose set the books down on a table, and put her hands together. They started to glow, and a ball of energy appeared in her hands. After channeling it for a second she pulled her hands apart, and released the energy into the room. Six red outlines appeared out of thin air showing a group of soldiers surrounding them.
Rose raised her hand again, and a one of the outlines was grabbed in a telekinetic grip and lifted into the air. The cloaking field fell, and a Da’Eusn soldier appeared before them.
“Waukin Federation Special Force Group 3,” Drake said remarking the uniform.
The other five soldiers decloaked, and a few different species from the Federation appeared. They all aimed their weapons at the TTF, and had their fingers on the triggers.
“Great job getting onto our ship in Haven's orbit,” Drake said clapping, “That is really an impressive feat. I couldn’t do that.”
“Drake not now,” Melshen said.
The Federation soldiers each took a step forward. Rose flicked her wrist, and the bird she kept in her magic cried in pain.
“If any of you dare make a move I will pop every blood cell in his body like bubble wrap,” Rose threatened.
“Wow that’s dark,” Drake said, “And totally awesome! Where did you hear that one? A youtube video?”
“Drake seriously,” Melshen said.
“Oh come on Mel you got to admit that was one of the best threats ever made in all of history,” Drake said.
The Federation soldiers glanced at their friend, and feared for his safety. The soldier tried to yell something, but he couldn’t form any proper words.
“Drop your weapons, and we will take you back to Federation territory where you belong,” Rose said.
“You better listen her to bros,” Drake said, “She’s not someone you want to see when she's hopping mad.”
“Captain Drake,” Rose said.
“Yes?” Drake said.
“Get the hell out of my Arcanium,” Rose said.
